Choosing Colombia.
The newcomer. Colombia's AI market is the youngest in the index and the cheapest per square foot of resort. Decameron operates the bulk of the volume tier — multiple properties on the Caribbean coast, the islands, and the Pacific — and a handful of mid-range Sonesta, Las Américas, and Estelar properties round out the inventory. Most of the action is around Cartagena, Santa Marta, and the Rosario / San Andrés island chains; the Pacific side has little AI.
Cartagena is the volume hub — direct flights from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, a colonial old city that's genuinely worth half a day, and the AI inventory clustering in Bocagrande and on Barú island a short boat south. Santa Marta is rougher and cheaper, and the Tayrona national park overlay gives the trip an adventure dimension. San Andrés, the country's outpost island closer to Nicaragua than to Colombia, has a small AI cluster but limited US connectivity.
What works in Colombia: prices that undercut the Caribbean median by a meaningful margin, food that has serious local identity (ceviche, arepas, the Caribbean-coast fish stews), and a country that handles non-resort tourism better than most AI destinations — the urban-and-beach hybrid actually works here.
What to weigh: the AI product itself isn't top-shelf. The Decameron volume properties run mid-tier even at the high end of their range (the chain scores cluster in the high 70s and low 80s), and the Caribbean's better operators (Hyatt, Excellence, Grand Velas) have no Colombia presence yet. English varies wildly on resort. And the US State Department travel advisory has historically been higher for Colombia than for the western Caribbean, though the popular tourist zones are well-policed.
The honest filter: Colombia is correct for value-first travelers willing to trade some resort polish for genuine cultural texture. It's the wrong call for the premium AI buyer.
