Cayo Levantado Resort

What it is.
The country's most-photographed resort, and the photo is doing real work. Cayo Levantado occupies its own island off the Samaná peninsula — a 15-minute boat from the mainland, no day-trippers after 4pm, and a beach profile that more or less invented the postcard Dominican Republic before Punta Cana existed as a category. The score (96) is the highest among DR family properties on the index.
The Samaná location is the structural trade-off. Most US travelers route through Punta Cana International (PUJ) and absorb a 2-to-3-hour transfer to Samaná, or fly into the smaller El Catey (AZS) and pay for the convenience. Either way, the day-of-arrival math is harder than booking into the Bavaro strip. The price ($12,789 for a family week) reflects the island-exclusivity premium rather than the brand.
What you're paying for: a private-island Caribbean week in the country with the deepest AI inventory, executed at a service standard the volume-strip properties don't approach. The whale-watching off Samaná from January through March is the rare AI excursion that's genuinely worth doing. For families willing to absorb the transfer for an island-resort experience, nothing else in the DR is competitive on the math.
