Choosing Costa Rica.
The category exception. Costa Rica isn't really an all-inclusive destination — the country built its tourism on jungle, adventure, and eco-lodge programming, not the all-inclusive resort. The index lists a small AI footprint here, but the properties that do exist tend to play in the high end of the score distribution and pair the resort experience with the country's other offering: actual nature.
Geographically, Guanacaste — the Pacific Gold Coast — is where the all-inclusive segment lives. The Westin Reserva Conchal, a 411-room beachfront in Playa Conchal, anchors the high-volume luxury segment; RIU Guanacaste runs the volume mid-tier; and several boutique adults-only options sit further south near Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio. The Caribbean coast and the Central Pacific have effectively no AI inventory.
What works in Costa Rica: the integration of resort and country. Rainforest canopy, volcano hikes, surfing, and cloud forest at Monteverde are 1–3 hours from most AI properties, the wildlife is genuinely abundant (sloths, monkeys, scarlet macaws), and the climate doesn't carry the hurricane risk the Caribbean does. Political stability and developed tourist infrastructure mean a Costa Rica trip can stretch from AI base to adventure without the friction of, say, the comparable Mexican itinerary.
What to weigh: the AI value proposition is weaker here than anywhere else in the region. Costa Rica is genuinely more expensive than its neighbors at every price tier, the resorts are smaller and less amenity-packed than the Mexican equivalent, and the rainy season (May–November) is more aggressive on the Pacific side than the marketing suggests. Direct flights are abundant to Liberia (Guanacaste) and San José, but the transfer from San José to the beach is two-plus hours each way.
The honest filter: Costa Rica is correct if the trip is half-resort and half-adventure. It's the wrong call if you want maximum beach time per dollar — the math doesn't work, and there are better-fitting countries for that brief.
